Standpipes

The International Building Code requires the installation of standpipes and spill control in buildings. In buildings over three stories, a Class III system must be installed. A Class II system is required in buildings below that height. Deep basements, on the other hand, do not need a standpipe system. However, high-rise buildings should install one for the same reasons. These types of standpipes will save precious time in firefighting operations and will allow occupants to escape the building faster.

In addition to a standpipe, the building must also be sprinklered throughout. The minimum residual pressure in a Class II system is 65 psi (4.5 bar). The minimum flow rate of a Class II system is 100 gpm (946 lpm). The water pressure at the hose connections must be limited to six to nine bars, and in some buildings the maximum is 1250 gpm. A Class II system must be installed near the perimeter of the building.
